A DCDC converter converts DC current from one voltage to another. On electric vehicles, it is used to power the low voltage (GLV) system using the large amount of energy stored in the HV Battery, similar to an alternator on an ICE vehicle. This allows a much smaller LV battery to be used.
An increasingly common trend in the EV industry is the use of a bidirectional DCDC converter to pre-charge the HV circuit instead of a pre-charge circuit.
