Engines manufactured for uses other than propelling an automobile such as a Briggs & Stratton or Predator engine are considered industrial engines in FSAE. These are subject to different rules because they are not designed for operation similar to a motorcycle engine such as the extreme rpms.
Rule
IN.10.3: "An engine which, according to the manufacturers’ specifications and without the required
restrictor, is capable of producing 5 hp per 100 cc or less". In 2023, with a displacement limit of 710cc, this applies to engines designed and manufactured to produce 35.5hp or less. This hp restriction does not consider the power made by the engine with a restrictor in an FSAE context.
Use
Teams that use an industrial motor often customize it to their purpose. A modern example would be Tennessee Tech's use of a customized Briggs V-twin.
